PETER CHARLES GAILLARD

Elected mayor November 3, 1865, succeeding Charles Macbeth. Removed from office by U. S. General E. R. S. Canby in October, 1867, replaced by General W. W. Burns.
Born 1812, died November 11, 1889, member of French Protestant (Huguenot) Church, buried at Magnolia Cemetery.
Son of James Gaillard and Harriet Porcher, married Anne L. Snowden 1838.
Educated at Pineville Academy and Pendleton Academy; graduate of South Carolina College (1832) and West Point (1835).
United States Army 2nd Lieutenant, frontier duty in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri; service under Zachary Taylor in the Seminole War, 1837-1838.
Cotton factor with Gaillard and Snowden, 1838-1861.
Brigade Major, South Carolina Militia, 1852-1861, entered Confederate service with the Charleston Battalion, CSA; fought at Secessionville and Battery Wagner, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.
Appointed County Treasurer in 1876, held that position until his death.
