WILLIAM WALLACE BURNS Appointed mayor by General E. R. S. Canby, commander of the Second Military District, in October 1867. Assigned to duty away from Charleston, succeeded by Milton Cogswell, March 1868.
Native of Ohio, born 1825, died April 19, 1892, buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Graduate (1847) United States Military Academy. Infantry duty; Commissary of Subsistence beginning in 1858. Chief Commissary in the Department of the Northwest until the end of the Civil War; 1865 to 1869 with the Commissary Departments of the South and East, Chief Commissary of Subsistence of the Division of the Atlantic and the Department of the East.
