JOHN GADSDEN

Elected intendant September 3, 1827, succeeding Joseph Johnson. Re-elected September 1, 1828; succeeded by Henry Laurens Pinckney, September 1829.
Born 1787, died January 24, 1831, buried in St. Philip's Episcopal churchyard.
Son of Philip Gadsden and Catherine Edwards, married Ann Edwards 1818.
Studied in Charleston at Associated Academy, graduate (1804) of Yale College. Studied law, admitted to bar in 1808.
Represented St. Philip's and St. Michael's parishes in State House, 1819; appointed United States District Attorney, 1820.
